"How do we get to a yes?"
For Roslyn Ausina, director of care management at UCI Health, the value of Embrace human moments resonates deeply. With 23 years of experience in nursing and 12 in case management, she understands the complexities of coordinating care for patient and their families during a crisis.
“I’m inspired every day to coordinate care and provide attention when families are going through trauma while navigating the healthcare system,” she explains. “We all have a responsibility to promote the patient’s dignity.”
She recalls a powerful moment when a mother of two, herself a former nurse, was battling a devastating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis. Paralyzed from the neck down and communicating only through a device she controlled by blinking, she expressed one simple wish: to attend a concert.
Instead of focusing on the barriers, her care team rallied around a hopeful question: “How do we get to a yes?” Physicians, nurses and social workers worked together to arrange transportation, support and even a companion to join her.
Shortly after the concert, a message arrived from the patient:
“I wanted to express my gratitude. Twice recently, I was on the verge of giving up on life. I had stopped eating and drinking for days. Now that I can find joy in life again, I’ll try harder not to give up.”
This was a moment where the team truly saw the whole person, shared an optimistic outlook and built genuine connection.
This value extends beyond our patients – it applies to our co-workers, too. Every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel seen, heard and valued.
“When we embrace human moments like these,” Ausina says, “we bring our values to life – and patients feel the difference.”
See the whole person. Understand each individual’s unique needs, strengths and circumstances beyond a diagnosis or job title.
Build genuine connections. Practice active listening, respond with empathy and show curiosity for others’ experiences.
Share an optimistic look. Lead with hope, especially during difficult moments and seek possibility in every situation.
